The Mullahs of "Science"

I added and removed a post yesterday on this exact subject. At Frontpagemag.com Tom McClintock puts it more concisely than I had:

The irony is that this is the same movement that wraps itself in pseudo-science, and yet declares that those who challenge their theory on scientific grounds “are on a par with Holocaust deniers” (as Boston Globe columnist Ellen Goodman wrote in February) and now, traitors. The Left has taken science, which is founded on a rigorous and dispassionate evaluation of fact and an equally vigorous and open debate of theory, and perverted it into a shrill, self-righteous and utterly intolerant intellectual tyranny. And like all authoritarian movements, it doesn’t take long for a tyranny of the mind (“global warming deniers are now on a par with Holocaust deniers”) to transform itself into a tyranny of brute force (“This is treason and we need to start treating them as traitors.”)

All I could add to that is that, in my experience, this has been the standard misuse of Science-with-a-capital-S. Set up science as something unquestionable, infallible, and holy; declare one's own opinions in tune with "Science;" then howl in outrage if anyone utters a syllable of contradiction.

I Think Google Is Broken

I tried to google "cowardly socialist anti-semitic drug-addicted sex offenders" and didn't get back a single link. I figured at least I'd get something about Hollywood.

This fills me with dread

Christopher Kallini at Kallini Brothers mentions a new drug in this post that may allow people to remain awake for 40-hour stretches without a loss in alertness and without the usual side affects of either prolonged wakefulness or amphetamine usage.

He sees it as an opportunity. But the possibility of such a drug disturbs me.

The technological marvels that make cell phones and pagers possible also mean that some of us are expected to be available 24/7 less because of business necessity and more because it's easier to contact us. A drug like this would tempt bad management to routinely expect 40-hour shifts from employees in some lines of work - and once this expectation became commonplace (as it already is in some fields like medicine), it would be expected even of those who can't or won't use the wakefulness med.

I see this thing not as a stay-awake-and-do-what-you-want pill but as a work-24-hours-a-day-forever pill. That makes me hope it doesn't work out.

Science and Technology Interlude

This image, captured by the Hubble Telescope, depicts the Antenna Galaxies, a pair of galaxies 90 million light years away that began colliding a few hundred millions of years ago.

In local news, there will be protests in your neighborhood because someone is trying to build a Wal-Mart somewhere in one of these galaxies.
