Oh, When the Saints

Sorry, I just haven't had anything to say lately. It would probably be a good idea for me to let better bloggers cover the Hurricane Katrina situation, as they can better give the situation the proper gravity it deserves. I usually like to find humor in tragedy, because let's be honest, tragedy is the best comedy, but I just haven't been in a humorous mood lately. Talk about whatever you want in the comments.

Bushwhacking Pollution

According to this Associated Press story,

EPA said that the amount of nitrogen oxides emitted from power plants and other industrial sources in the 19 states had fallen to 593,000 tons in 2004, a nearly 50 percent drop from the 1.2 million tons emitted in 2000. That reduced summer ozone over the four years by 10 percent, EPA said.

How's that economically devastating Kyoto protocol working out for you other industrialized countries, by the way? (hat tip)

Talk you off what, Pop-Pop?

Frank J, who, based on his prior endorsements of Firefly and often his confessed appreciation of the Simpsons and Futurama, obviously has very good taste in comedy shows, has been endorsing one of my favorite (though somewhat obscure) new shows, Arrested Development.

I have the Season 1 DVD, and I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to check it out, as the humor really is quite brilliant. There's really something for everyone with a sense of humor, whether you prefer the dry sarcasm of the show's main character, the Simpsons-esque craziness of some of the other main characters, or brilliantly subtle humor that you have to re-watch episodes to pick up on. There's a lot of great guest stars on this show, which I'm normally not a big fan of (I hate it when they have guest stars besides the reoccurring characters voiced by Kelsey Grammar and Phil Hartman and other regular guests on the Simpsons who don't play themselves), but this show uses guest stars better than any other show I've seen, my favorite being an appearence by Dan Castellaneta, voice of Homer Simpson, in season 2. It's really an awesome show all around, and I highly recommend giving it a shot if you haven't yet, though it helps to watch them from the beginning because there is a lot of continuity and self-referencing. Season 2 is coming to DVD on October 11, and although it's still very good, Season 1 is better, and it is my favorite show currently running (though only because recent Simpsons seasons have sucked).

I have, up to this point, yet to speak, write, or type a single negative word about Cindy Sheehan, but...

The woman is obviously insane. Have you heard/read some of the things this woman is saying?

Iraq was not a terrorist state. But now that we have decimated the country, the borders are open, freedom fighters from other countries are going in

Okay, first of all, I'm sure the Iraninan and Syrian insurgents care a lot about the freedom of Iraqis. I mean, those guys were always Johnny-on-the-spot with an IED whenever Saddam was less than liberal in his granting of freedom to the Iraqi people. Nothing concerns those guys more than the well-being of John and Jane Q. al-Muhammad. As for Iraq not being a terrorist state, even if they were not in any way involved in 9-11, it's kind of hard to argue that Saddam's government did not give support to terrorist groups (we already know that Saddam offered monetary rewards to the families of suicide bombers, but of course, Cindy "It's all Israel's fault!" Sheehan considers them to be "freedom fighters" as well), and that Iraq was not a base of operations for terrorist groups related and unrelated to the Iraqi government. It's one thing to make a moral argument against this war, but to base it entirely on false premises like these is asinine.

Follow that link, and you'll find a bunch more of her inane drivel, as well as information on some of the white supremecist groups going out to support her, mainly because she called the Iraq war a war for Israel, and has made similarly anti-Israel and anti-Semetic statements.

This story never deserved the kind of media coverage it recieved (though, when you consider the next biggest story at the moment seems to be gas prices, there does not appear to be a whole lot going on that the media is actually interested in). It's sad that Casey Sheehan was killed in action, but that fact is completely inconsequential to the legitimacy of what Cindy Sheehan is saying. Trying to base the legitimacy of your arguments on emotional appeal is generally frowned upon in college-level debate, and certainly shouldn't be taken seriously on a national, political level. Her protestations should be analyzed on the merits of what she has actually said, but the mainstream media is going out of its way to avoid publishing some of her statements. I'm all for criticism of the government, but I'm getting fed up with this blatant media activism.

Assholes and Douchebags

Today I drove down to Nelson's Ledges state park, in Portage County, OH, with my little brother. I've been visiting there occasionally since I was a little kid, and it's always been a pretty awesome park despite an obnoxious amount of litter (mostly left by idiot college kids from Kent State). Last time I went, which might have been a few years back at most, there was no way anyone could miss the pressence of new bridges and guard rails, and signs forbidding you from passing the rails, newly posted around the cliffs by safety nazis who had long had their eye on this park. Those were, of course, still there (though no worse than last time), but an even more miserable eyesore was omnipressent throughout the park. There was hardly any spot you could go to in the park where you couldn't spot graffiti spray-painted on some rock or cliff face. It was utterly disgusting, especially to see this when visiting what had been a favorite park of mine since childhood, and some place I imagined some day taking my own kids (if I ever have kids) to. God, some people are serious assholes.

Oh, and on my way home my brother and I were nearly killed some douchebag with a Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker who had passed up the exit, but apparently didn't think our lives were important enough to get off on the next exit and turn around. Seriously, the guy acted like he was playing chicken with us for the lane, and even as I slammed on the breaks (with no idea whether or not any vehicle was close behind me, as my full attention was on the Kerry/Edwards douchebag) I honestly felt that an accident was an unavoidable certainty. To add insult to attempted murd -- uh, injury, this douchebag totally fucked up my gas mileage by forcing me to slam on my breaks while driving upwards of 60mph, while gas is almost $3 a gallon. Thanks, douchebag. Thanks a lot.

MA plays armchair political analyst

A lot of people seem to be worried about Hillary Clinton becoming our next president. I'm certainly no fan of hers, but Hillary becoming president is about the least of my worries as far as politics is concerned. I mean, even if she does win I really can't see the legislature moving back to the Democrats anytime soon. Especially since there seems to be this ever-growing rift between centrist and leftist Democrats. Hillary, like her husband, I believe is far more concerned with personal ambitions than political ideology, and I expect she'll maintain this facade of being a moderate at least until after the election of her second term as president. And while I think Hillary has taken a hawkish position on the war on terror for purely political purposes, she is still less of a pussy on the issue of terrorism than a substantial number of Republican politicians. Even if, like I said, it takes a backseat to her other ambitions.

I actually caught about 15 minutes of Limbaugh today (mmm... Kool-Aid...), and he made a good point about how the far-left faction of the Democratic party is the group that is getting energized and really doing the grass roots work for the cause, the leaders of the party (and he singled out Hillary specifically) are pandering to the more moderate wing of the party, and that the far-left was bound to notice this. I definitely see the potential for disaster for the Democratic party, and the militant Bush-haters are the ones bringing it about, by alienating other Democrats and potential Democrats, and doing way more than Ann Coulter or Karl Rove could ever dream of doing to harm them. Not only are they alienating Democrats, but they are also uniting and mobilizing Republicans. Many Republicans have legitimate grievances with much of Bush's performance as a "conservative", but crap like Fahrenheit 911, the constant slew of over the top conspiracy theories, and the completely unreasonable demands for immediate pullout from Iraq only served to remind such conservatives which party was they better identified with.

Remember what happened last time a Clinton was elected president? It completely destroyed a half-century monopoly the Democratic Party had over the federal government. I only see things getting worse for Democrats from here on out, and I see Hillary (and her pandering to moderates and even the right) as being a potential catalyst for this. Only time will tell, but the way the left has become so consumed with obsession over Bush, to the extent that they seem to have discarded their traditional ideology except when it is useful to them in opposing the president, I just don't see a happy ending in their near future.

Head on a Platter

So, I see a headline on AOL News, "Preacher Wants Leader Killed" followed by the subheading, "He Calls for an Assassination - Who's on Robertson's Hit List?". My initial thoughts were, "I knew Pat Robertson was a little crazy, but now he's calling for assassinations?" Anyway, I clicked the link to see the actual article, and the article's actual healine is "Pat Robertson Calls for Assassination of Hugo Chavez", so while he is indeed calling for an assassination, I don't think it is any indication of being mentally unwell if it is Hugo Chavez that you wish to see dead. I mean, I think any sane and decent person would want more evil dictators to die horrible deaths.

So, in closing, Pat Robertson is a bit crazy (which has long been established, I believe), but not dangerously crazy.

Boulevard of Discarded CDs

So, my dad just last night gave me a copy of Green Day's latest album, American Idiot, which he found laying on the street. It doesn't have a case, but the CD itself seems to be in pretty good condition. I've mentioned before that I used to be a really big Green Day fan, and this was their first album that I hadn't bothered to purchase. So, anyway, I'm wondering... does God want me to have this album? Oh well, so long as I'm not sending any of my hard earned money to millionaire socialists.

Mmm... early bird worms...

I'm starting at a new job today, and so now I'm going to be waking up this early every weekday. Hooray!

Expect weirder and more nonsensical Angry Stick-figure Man cartoons from now on. Actually, come to think of it, I probably won't be able to top this one.

See you all in hell

Allah cracked corn, and I don't care

A few loosely related points on my mind

When has Palestine ever taken the initiative in taking another step towards peace?

When has Palestinian leadership, or any Islamic leadership in the Middle East for that matter, ever shown that they have any interest whatsoever in peacefully coexisting with Israel or any part of the Muslim world?

Do leftists consider nations governed by violent and oppressive dictators to be at "peace" if they are not involved in a war with another country? If not, then why do they consider themselves legitimate in referring to their opposition to the Iraq war as being "for peace", or in any way supporting peace?

Why is it justifiable to keep speed limits as high as they are (and don't take this as a call for lower speed limits by me), even though we know we're going to lose thousands of people a year in car accidents who we wouldn't have lost if the speed limit never went over 15mph, but sacrificing lives to remove a tyrant responsible for more deaths than the war that removed him is not? If the bodycount is the basis on which you judge the morality of the war, then why don't you protest high speed limits as well?

Why is it you're a chickenhawk if you think the United States should finish the job that we've already committed ourselves to, but not if you're a former United States president who waged an entire war from bombers to prevent the American casualties from hurting you politically?

Why do leftists never, at least that I am aware of, speak condemningly of the actual torture and persecution of gays in Muslim countries by their own governments?

Could a foreign diplomat ever convince you, through anything he/she could possibly say during a visit to your country, to change any one of your deepest held religious or political beliefs? Then why would it seem reasonable to assume that diplomacy could ever be effective in dealing with Islamic radicals who are willing to strap themselves with explosives a blow up children to support their political/religious beliefs?

For that matter, what did Jimmy Carter actually accomplish in the Middle East?

Why should Palestinians ever bother to reconsider their current methods of terrorism when they repeatedly are given concessions by Israel if they are patient in pursuing their current path?

What, if anything, about Islam as a religion is in any way deserving of my respect? I have my own personal problems with religions that aren't trying to kill everybody.

Okay, sorry, I just had to get all of that out of my system.

That's Kole

AfD's favorite aspiring politician, Mike Kole of the Libertarian Party, was interviewed on college radio today, and every word he said made me a happy man. If you're interested in hearing him you can download the show by right-clicking here, and selecting 'Save Target As...' on the cursor menu. He's only on for about the first 40 minutes of the show, but you have to download the entire hour and a half, which will likely mean leaving your computer on for a while. Also, the shows are only archived for a week, so you better download it before next Wednesday if you're interested. Anyway, Mike is awesome, and for any new people, he does occasionally comment on this blog.

Where's my NEA grant?

Regular commenter Murel Bailey and I were discussing old cartoons we used to draw when we were younger, so I decided to post some on here, and encourage any of you readers who have any humorous old cartoons or sketches from your youth (don't tell me Murel and I are the only creative geniuses here) to post them online and leave a link to them in the comments. Or at least tell us about them. I didn't find all the ones I wanted, but I have some I thought were stupidly funny here, here, and here, and I have more I intend to post, but my computer is acting up right now so I'll do that some other day (the Simpsons seasons 6 DVD comes out this morning, so don't hold me to anything for the next week or two).

P.S. This is the greatest picture ever!!

An odd question

Does anybody know the name of that fairy tale where the guy isn't allowed to cut his hair or nails, but he has an unlimited gold whenever he reaches into his pockets, plus I think he has like one or two more blessings beside the gold thing? That's about all I can remember about the story, so sorry if that isn't very helpful. I just all of a sudden remembered the story like a week ago, and I can't for the life of me think of what it's called, and it's driving me nuts.

Islam be damned

Someone at Right-Thinking posted a very interesting quote attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville, which is especially interesting considering that de Tocqueville lived from 1805 - 1859, and thus did not get to see as clearly as we do how accurate his assertion really was:

"Muhammad brought down from heaven and put into the Koran not religious doctrines only, but political maxims, criminal and civil laws, and scientific theories. The Gospels, on the other hand, deal only with the general relations between man and God and between man and man. Beyond that, they teach nothing and do not oblige people to believe anything. That alone, among a thousand reasons, is enough to show that Islam will not be able to hold its power long in ages of enlightenment and democracy, while Christianity is destined to reign in such ages, as in all others."

Damn, talk about some impressive insight/foresight.

Are Libs funnier than Cons?

Apparently that's the big, pointless debate that's going on lately. Of course, AfD is all about pointlessness, so let's talk about this a little. I've always been of the opinion that the funniest people were geeks (find a picture of the writers for your favorite comedy show) , and never really thought much about politics as a factor in it. I can certainly think of plenty of people on both sides of the political spectrum that crack me up, and certainly there are duds on both sides as well. However, I've noticed that people on the left, and maybe people on the right do it to, but I just tend not to notice it, are prone to these big circle jerks where attributing certain characteristics to the group they associate with ("liberals") gives them an excuse to blow themselves for how great and wonderful at everything they are, without any individual accomplishment of their own they can point to. Hell, the guy I link to admits at the beginning of his post that he's not that funny.

I often make reference on AfD to the message board of a far-left Democrat friend of mine, where I, and for a little while Fectin as well, was the only right-leaning person to post on the board. I have never linked to it because my friend has asked me not to, because he wants to prevent some former friends of his from finding the board, but believe me I would looooooooove to show you guys some of the conversations that have went on over there. Unfortunately, I am a stubbornly loyal friend, even when my friends are filthy pinkos. Anyway, here is part of a post by my friend from that board:

The more I've been thinking about it lately, about why there are two different parties and two different types of people, I've been drawing more and more conclusions about myself and others. Why am I a liberal? Whats the difference? Why are there more liberals on college campuses while the vast majority of backwoods America is conservative?

I think it comes down to one thing. The ability to see outside yourself.

You realize that your point of view isnt the only one, and that it isnt necessarily right. In fact the more I think about it, the more I realize that no one is truly correct in their assertions about the world. Its just how they see things. This isnt just politics, its religion, its economics, and its other social issues as well.

When you invade a country, there are innocent citizens with lives of their own who must be considered. When you make a sweeping social doctrine, you must realize that it has implications, some unseen.

This is why I dislike conservatism.

Its arrogant.
Aww, isn't that sweet? They're so open-minded! The only problem is... they really aren't. I'll post the entire rant by him in the near future, but I don't want to divert this post too much from its original topic of humor. My point is, after this my friend goes on to a litany of stereotypes and attribution of motives to conservatives that are total bullshit. I mean, the only "conservative" these people ever even talk to, yours truly, is pro-gay marriage, supports first trimester abortion (in a legal sense, not a moral sense), thinks flag burning should absolutely be legal, and supports legalization of marijuana. They just seem to ignore all of this when they talk about conservaitives, but will post any left-wing party-line crap that pops up in their inbox (there's an impressive number of topics posted on that site that have been previously debunked on Snopes). You wanna talk about arrogance, here's a comment posted in another thread by the one leftist board member who can put up a decent debate and defense of his beliefs, and who I do honestly consider to be genuinely intelligent most of the time,

"Now, if the general American populace wasn't...well, lets be direct, absolutely fucking retarded, this wouldn't be a problem. However, they are, and the political left won't get anywhere considering them anything more than Lemmings and bringing pillows to what amounts to a UFC match."

There's that liberal empathy for you. Here's a portion of my rebuttal to my friends post, as well as to a few of the comments in that thread,

From your comments it's pretty obvious that you have no intention of genuinely trying to understand conservatives. You only want to put on display this template of seeing the world outside yourself, because it obviously casts you in a positive light, but you simply refuse to understand those who don't understand you. This notion of seeing things outside yourself allows you to believe that you understand conservatives and see them for what they are, but you only continue to see them in the exact way that you wanted to see them from the getgo, and because of this you deem them worthy of your contempt. Don't try to dress this up as some sort of epiphany.

Okay, we here at AfD aren't exactly the most empathetic folks towards libruls, either, but we don't make any pretentions to be. Since I believe that at the center of most right-wing philosophies is individualism, my personal belief for why libruls is libruls is that they are collevtivists, and see government as the only mechanism to do good. A common rebuttal I present to my friends on the left is to challenge them on what individual good deeds and acts of selflessness they can attest to, and if they could contrast them positively with, say, my own. I'm no saint myself, but I'm not going to try to imbue myself with goodness by latching on to someone else's accomplishments. When I was but a wee lad, and we'd talk about the civil rights movement in school, I used to fantasize about me being a heroic demonstrator, boldly marching alongside MLK in the face of injustice. In real life I'm a big, lazy pussy. The difference between me and a lib is that I am not going to pretend like my proclaimed association with a higher group makes me anything more than a big, lazy pussy. I try to be honest with myself, folks. I have long believed that leftist ideology is, for a lot of people, a means of making themselves feel noble and benevolent for beinf "for" this cause or that one, but without having to put in any effort or sacrifice on their own part. When I was in 12th grade I remeber being given a question in a history class, after watching the movie Mississippi Burning I believe, where we were asked if we had been around during the time that era if we would have been willing to sit next to a black person in a restaurant, like the character in the movie did, despite harassment from others? My reponse, which the teacher liked, was something along the lines of "I'd like to believe that I would have had the courage and decency to do so, but I don't believe I am inherently a better person than those raised in that society during that time period, so I can not know for certain that I would have been brave or honorable enough to do the right thing under those circumstances, or if I even would have recognized what was the right thing to do if I was raised in such a society." Of course, so many of libruls I talk to seem to have some sort of martyr complex, because of living with the horrific injustices of fascist AmeriKKKa, or else a sense of supreme intellectual sense of superiority over the "sheeple" of this country. Usually both.

How does this relate to humor? Well, being funny on purpose isn't usually that easy. Everytime I post something that I hope you guys will find funny I get completely neurotic and worry that it's dumb or lame or something. Yet, here we have some lefty proclaiming the terrific hilariousness of the left, and if you bother to read the noticebly humorless comments to his post you will see a great deal of agreement from other like-minded libs. There seems to be a "We're funnier because I called it!" philosophy in play here. I'd like to know what the opinions of independants are.

As a punk fan, I've always been willing to admit that as a generalization lefties usually make better music, so it's not like I'm unwilling to concede points like this. And, yeah, there are plenty of brilliantly funny left-wingers out there (I absolute love The Onion and Men in Hats), but I think it's pretty weak to make such declarations about yourself. I mean, it's like being one of those comedians that laughs at all of their own jokes. And, hey, maybe left-wingers do, on a whole, have a better sense of humor than right-wingers, but I think we deserve slack in that the material we have to work with doesn't give us too much opportunity to hone our skills:

Simple maths suggests that with the population of the world around 6 billion, United States expenditure on defence at around 370 Billions it is feasible that if every man, woman and child in the world were to receive as a gift from the United States 1 Billion dollars each, there would still be 364 Billion dollars left over for defence spending.

Come on! It's like heckling the Special Olympics!

One more point on my friends message board, I provided a lenghty rebuttal to the above post, to which I recieved the following response from my pinko friend's best friend:

I doubt you'll see any other posts besides my own when you get back, or if you are already back, because no one really cares what you have to say. That's my right wing talking, so if I come off as an asshole blame it on the Right (or wrong). If I had decided to be in a left wing mood I'd probably listen to your arguments and then respond to them accepting that you're entitled to your own opinion and that I might not be correct. But seeing as how I'm right wing today I don't care what you have to say because you probably disagree with me and therefore you must be wrong. I don't know about everyone else, but I'd say that's a pretty good sum up of the two different sides of the political compass

Damn fine libby humor thar, and some damn fine libby logic, too. My response, of course, was "Gee, why is it you always seem to be in a "right-wing mood" on [this message board]?"

That's my whole rant. Sorry my lenghty rants always go all over the place. I'm pretty sure I have ADD.

Cheese and Apple

That was my breakfast this morning, and it's also what I vomitted this morning. I felt perfectly fine up until a few moments before I threw up, then felt perfectly fine after I threw up, so I don't know what's up with that. I think it's been a few years since the last time I vomitted, so this was just like random projectiles from my mouth. The cheese tasted unholy on its way up, too.

Don't you feel better with me having shared that with you?

Not like I got a whole lot else going on...

Ugh. What a lame summer. Sitting around the house, hoping to get a phone call from my potential future employer. Here's some random crap:

I picked up Conker: Live & Reloaded (or whatever it's called) for X-Box today, and so far it is a severe disappointment. I remember not expecting to be too impressed for the original Conker's Bad Fur Day for N64 (and I honestly wasn't impressed with the lame humor in the game), but it ended up being really fun, and I thought the multiplayer was the best I had ever played. It was certainly the best game I had for when a friend was over and I needed a multiplayer game Unfortunately, I loaned the game and N64 to one of my stupid friends, he left at the house of a friend he is no longer friends with, and now it looks like I will never see my N64 again. Anyway, I was hoping this new port would make up for that, but unfortunately none of the original multiplayer levels seem to be in this game, and the completley revamped gameplay for the multiplayer levels blows ass. I know a lot of the features are meant for online play, but fuck that, I can't afford online games and even if I could I am not putting even more money in to that piece of shit. The beauty of the original Conker was that the gameplay was so simplistic, but with the new one everything in multiplayer is so fucking convoluted, I can't even tell if I've actually killed anything in any of the multiplayer levels. And, seriously, so much text pops up on screen that it renders the game unplayable in split-screen mode. I haven't played too far into the single player game yet, but the only improvement seems to be in graphics. The few changes to the actual game I've seen so far have been pointless and dumb, and there's a load screen every time you enter a new area (which didn't happen in the N64 version). I don't usually review games on AfD, but I had to make sure nobody else puts down their hard-earned money on this turd. I've usually trusted Game Informer magazine to keep me from buying a crappy game, but they really dropped the ball on this one. And just thinking of how long it took to put out this game (a port, no less!), I just hope Rare goes bankrupt, as it is obvious that they've lost their magic touch with games with the move to the current generation of consoles.

Is it just me, or does Green Day seem to be getting a shitload more press than they ever recieved before? I mean, I know their new album is selling well, but it is nowhere near the masterpiece that Dookie was (Boulevard of Broken Dreams sounds like a fucking Avril Lavigne song!). Hell, I couldn't even get interested in their new album enough to listen to it all the way through once even. There's some decent songs, but their title track sounds like it was come up with by some sort of song-writing machine that was programmed to take a bunch of Green Day songs, and just put out some really generic Green Day song. And this is on the album that they are being lauded as innovators for?

Have you ever wanted to punch a frail, elderly woman in the face before? No? Then you've never met my grandmother.

Seriously folks, it's nice to be able to come online and talk to intelligent people, because so many of the people in my life are just utterly abysmal. I swear I know a disproportionately high amount of people who just somehow manage to function despite having no apparent cognitive thinking skills. Most of these relationships I seem to have inherited through no fault of my own, yet they tend to be the people who most regularly force their way into your life. The worst part is, I've been kicking my own ass over the last few years, especially this summer, for failing to stay in touch with people I really enjoyed being around. And yet, some people who I would have been perfectly content to never have known I am apparently stuck with for the rest of my life (I shudder at the prospect of a hereafter). Thank God for you readers, you have no idea how much I appreciate it whenever you comment here.

Has anybody ever had their ears pop so that your hearing is somewhat blocked, and you can't get rid of this impairment for weeks? This seems to happen to me every so often, and for like the last two weeks or so my hearing has really sucked. I am able at times to temporarily pop them back to normal, but they return to their current state within seconds. Is there anything I can do about this?

Anyway, I've been having a mental drought as far as what to post on AfD lately. I'll have to think up something creative for you guys, maybe another Angry Stick-figure Man.

I am Mad Alchemist, master of updates!

Well, not really, but whatever. I'm done with the school semester, which is a pretty big relief. I'm a little worried that might get a C in my math class (it would be my first C since high school, back when I didn't give a crap about school at all), but there's nothing I can do to change things at this point, so what's done is done. Nobody in my group for that communist project was able to get together outside of class at all, so a lot of our interesting ideas we wanted to incorporate for the project did not get accomplished. That's a shame, because it would have been pretty cool to post a picture of us dressed as commies on AfD, and now I have no insentive to go purchase commie-style clothes. One thing I did do, I went to a bona fide communist bookstore and talked to the woman there. She was actually very friendly, and seemed to like the fact that I was inquiring about them. It was weird how casually she would throw phrases like "religious fascists" into what was for the most part a casual conversation with a stranger, since I don't know why she would assume I shared those sentiments (I obviously don't). She tried to talk me into buying this commie newspaper for a dollar, but something about spending money on communism just doesn't sit well with me. I thought this was kind of funny, when I first walked into the store the woman was on the phone, and I overheard the following "Did you see, I posted on IndyMedia -- Oh, you saw it? Wasn't that fucking hilarious?!" I know some people who decided to stop by that store a few years back, and one of them asked the guy who was then running the store how he could believe in that stuff, and the guy supposedly just flipped out on them, and as a result of which he is now referred to by those people I know as "The F-Word Guy".

Another group member tried calling a communist group that she got the phone number for online, and she says the woman she talked to was really hostile. She kept insisting that my group member explain what she was calling for, and when she told the woman that she wasn't for or against her, but rather just interested in learning some information, the woman pretty much told her that if she didn't already understand it she'd never understand it. My group member said that she felt as if some of the woman's antagonism had to do with the fact that it is obvious from her voice that she is a black woman, though she admitted this might just be paranoia on her part.

I still don't know if I got that job I interviewed for (they told me it could be up to a month before I get called in), but I'm hoping so. I have about a month until the fall semester starts, so I should be posting more over the next few weeks, but then again I tend to be pretty friggin' unreliable. I likes when y'alls post comments on AfD, so keep 'em coming, any topic.

Over There

Don't expect anything good from this week (this is, of course, assuming that you're the type of person expects me to put up somthing good ever, which if you are, I'd like to see your precedent for this belief) because things are pretty chaotic. This is my last day of the semester, I just had a big test today (which I suspect I might have bombed, but I really hope not because I'm hoping to graduate without getting anything less than a B in any of my classes) I have another job interview scheduled for Thursday, the commie project keeps falling apart because my group can't seem to get together outside of school, I have to revise this paper I turned in Monday to add more sources, and I have two finals this week.

Thankfully, there are consistantly good bloggers out there, like Dane. Check out his post on this new FX show, Over There, about the Iraq war. I've only seen one promo for it (on the FOX network, as I only get the major networks on my TV, me primitive no have cable), and it looked pretty hokey, so I figured it was going to be a bunch of left-wing Hollywood B.S. Of course, to be fair, I percieve 24 as having a pretty right-wing bias (though they seem to try to be fair, or at least politically correct in their handling of politically incorrect plotlines), and that show is hokey as hell.
