AfD Movie Reviews

I saw a lot of movies last month, so I'ma do a review

The Prestige - This movie was excellent. I highly recommend it.

Idiocracy - Also recommended. The writing is a bit clumsy, but this was the most I've laughed at a comedy movie in recent memory.

Munich Pretty so-so. It started off decently, and for quite a ways into it I was thinking the people who complained of it being anti-Israel were being petty and biased, but towards the end the movie gets both stupid and frankly offensive. Like most Spielberg stuff, you have to take the great moments along with the retarded ones (the Mossad's primary source of intelligence on all of their assassination targets was a quirky, free-lance French man?).

The Departed - For all the positive press it got, I would have to say this movie was kind of overrated, but still very good. I loved the ending. This would actually be a good rental for St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Apocalypto - Pretty decent. Basically it's a standard gory, race-against-time action flick, except with the nice twist that it's set in the context of Mayan civilization. And who doesn't love exotic-looking women wearing little more than jewlery?

I think there was more, but I can't remember it. I'll update the post if it comes to mind.

Incidentally, the greatest novel ever has been optioned by director Don Coscarelli for what, if done right, should be the greatest movie ever.

Who Washington is fucking

I couldn't help but notice that Eliot Spitzer's special lady friend is really friggin' hot. Though I suppose for $4K, a public humiliation, and the loss of a powerful political position, she had better be.

Speaking of disgusting old men who get more 'tang than I could ever aspire to, Slate has helpfully provided a guide to who Washington D.C. is putting their penises on that aren't their wives. There's even a map.

Oddball Biographies part 15

Today I'm doing two guys, James Burke and Tommy DeSimone. These are the guys Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci portrayed in the movie Goodfellas, though the amazing thing about them is that they were far more insane in real life than the movie, and the film in general seems to be a toned down portrayal of the actual events they were based upon. Particularly, the movie fails to convey what a horrible human being Burke was (and I only have the nerve to call him such on a public forum because he's dead).

Oddball Biographies part 14

Not sure if Brian O'Dea fits in with the sort of quirky characters I tend to put up here, but what fascinates me about the guy made his drug smuggling experience his résumé when applying for more legitimate work, because it demonstrated how awesome he was at organization and logistics. Talk about brass ones.
